Watch for this trail to be one of the first to be clear of snow, rewarding early-season hikers with trailside flowers and spectacular views of two lakes that were once part of the famous flume system that supplied water to Virginia City from the 1870s into the 1900s. Deer, owls, goshawks, Stellar’s jays, flickers, and chickadees are plentiful on this pleasant and conveniently located hike. First, walk around petite Spooner Lake’s north shore to the North Canyon connector trail. Pass Spooner Cabin and Spencer’s Cabin on the way to North Canyon Road, which leads to the Marlette Lake trailhead. While the trail initially gains some elevation, the 1,200-foot climb to the saddle above Marlette Lake is one of the gentlest uphill paths on the east side of the lake. A gentle descent leads to the lake’s southern inlet stream.
