Set in the southeastern corner of the state, the Chiricahua Mountains are one of the most interesting of Arizona’s sky islands. On one end hoodoos rise into the sky in weird and unnatural shapes and on the other end laughing streams host exotic bird species in brilliant colors rarely seen north of Mexico. In between, miles of hiking trails wind through pine forests and wildflower-filled meadows that are home to deer, black bears, mountain lions, javelina, and coatimundi. While in the Chiricahuas, be sure to set aside a day to visit the Chiricahua National Monument. Compacted ash laid down by a volcanic eruption 27 million years ago formed the rocks of this area.
