Eastern Arizona is the land of the Three C’s: copper, cotton, and cattle, all of which are well represented in the Safford area. Stockton Pass was once the eastern gateway to Aravaipa Canyon and the Sulphur Springs Valley, where the third C reigned supreme. Marshall Trimble, in Roadside History of Arizona, called this the “richest cattle country in the West,” miles and miles of prime grazing land fed by the rains and snows of the Pinaleño, Galiuro, and Chiricahua mountains. AZ 266 loops around the southern end of the Pinaleños, slipping through Stockton Pass on its way to Bonita, once a thriving town of 1,000 souls.
