Tiny KP Cienega is our favorite campground in one of our favorite parts of Arizona. Whether you are traveling north from the mining town of Clifton or south from Alpine, you are driving through some of the finest scenery you’ll see anywhere. This route, steeped in history and superstition, has been designated the Coronado Trail Scenic Byway, and it roughly follows the northward route of Spanish explorer Francisco Vásquez de Coronado. He and his army passed this way in 1540—the first Europeans to do so—looking for the fabled Seven Cities of Cibola. Coronado never found his cities of gold, but his expedition created a legacy integral to the history of the Southwest. The word cienega means "wetlands" or "marsh," and you pass a small, marshy pond as you make youre way to five campsites underneath a small stand of ponderosa, spruce, and Douglas fir. The campground is set a mile back from the highway in a serene meadow. Look for wild turkey, elk, and deer on your way in. On rare occasions, bear and even recently reintroduced Mexican gray wolves have wandered into the campground.
