The Blue River is cool and clear, surrounded by lush greenery, steep canyon walls, tall ponderosa pines, and plenty of history. Driving south on the Blue River Road (Forest Road 281) from Alpine, you descend on dirt switchbacks, following the river over a series of one-lane bridges that gradually lengthen as the canyon grows deeper. Intriguing red sandstone formations appear and disappear as the foliage around you grows more lush. The tall pines linger, but the canyon floor becomes the domain of willows and wild grapes. The road is graded and quite smooth, with a few tight squeezes and curves. During rainy seasons, the road may be muddy, with rocks, branches, or other debris washed down from the upper slopes. Passenger cars should be fine except in very wet or icy conditions.
