The Apache term Hon-Dah is often translated as “be my guest,” and it’s an apt name for the small resort town at the crossroads of the Fort Apache reservation. The ancestral land of the White Mountain Apache, the reservation ranges from the stark beauty of the Salt River Canyon to the majestic cloudswathed peak of Mount Baldy. The tribe welcomes visitors to Arizona’s greenest, most hospitable region, a patchwork of forested mountains and blue lakes crisscrossed with perennial streams. Fishing is one of the region’s main attractions, and the campgrounds on the reservation are all associated with one of the many lakes and streams. These areas see considerable use by both visitors and tribal members, but a few more primitive, harder-to-reach areas are seldom busy, one of which is Pacheta Lake.
