Close your eyes and think of Arizona. What image comes to mind? If you imagined barren wastelands and saguaro cacti, pack your bags and call in sick, because we have something else to show you! In the heart of the White Mountains runs the Black River, a perennial tributary of the Salt River. It waters a forested Eden reached by driving north of Alpine, up the Coronado Highway. You plunge into the midst of Apache-Sitgreaves National Forest, more than 2 million acres of some of the most beautiful land in the state. Once you reach the recreation area, Forest Road 276 runs with the Black River for 6 miles through a deep gorge in the pine-covered cliffs. Rock formations stained with lichen jut out between moss-draped trees, attesting to the rare abundance of moisture here. The river runs fast and clear, racing you down the road.
