North of the White Mountains, the land turns to high desert plains: rolling, grassy hills and nothing for miles but dotted dark shapes resolving into junipers or cows as you approach. A rise or dip in the road may suddenly reveal a rugged wash or outcrop flashing past, then just waving grass, stubby pinyons, and sky again. Hidden back in a rocky bowl in those rolling hills is 1,500-acre Lyman Lake, centerpiece of the oldest recreational state park in Arizona. As you drive into the park, you pass the dam that creates this reservoir on the Little Colorado River, whose watershed drains the highest northern slopes of the White Mountains, including Escudilla Mountain and Mount Baldy. Look down into the muddy pond to your left and you’ll usually see turtles sunning themselves.
