Haigler Canyon recreation site sits along perennial Haigler Creek, just north of the small ranching town of Young and beneath the Mogollon Rim, the 2,000-foot escarpment that separates the Colorado Plateau from the lower valleys and deserts. The creek is fed by natural springs and stocked with rainbow trout in the springtime. Sycamores, cottonwoods, and Gambel oaks burst into a flurry of color during the fall and early winter. This campground received a major makeover in 2007. Previously, dispersed camping sites were arranged along the banks of the creek. The renovation resulted in two camping areas outside of the flood channel, significantly reducing human impact on the creek and surrounding vegetation.
