The Mogollon Rim is a sheer palisade of limestone and sandstone cliffs that runs diagonally across much of Arizona, marking the boundary between the Sonoran Desert lowlands and the Colorado Plateau. As you climb northward from the Valley of the Sun, you leave behind the realm of ocotillo and saguaro for a dense forest of ponderosa pine. The dramatic, canyon-carved slopes rise to more than 7,000 feet, and among the trees are scattered springs, streams, and a dozen lakes, making this one of the state’s most popular summer destinations. Split between two national forests, the Coconino in the west and the Apache Sitgreaves in the east, the rim country offers a plethora of camping, from primitive, secluded, dispersed sites to RV-friendly recreation areas.
