The Mogollon Rim area is known for its tall pines and crystalline, trout-stocked lakes. The General Crook National Recreation Trail and its parallel route, Forest Road 300 or the Rim Road, wend their way along the 2,000-foot escarpment from east to west. The majority of rim-country traffic stays within a few miles of this road and the well-known lakes. North of the Mogollon Rim on FR 504 is Chevelon Crossing Campground, one of the smallest and least-used of the rim campgrounds. With only six sites on sloping, rocky ground in a canyon, this campground might seem an unlikely candidate for a best rating, but it’s got a few outstanding features.
