Only 10 miles of smooth gravel roads separate Pinal Peak Recreation Area from the mining meccas of Globe and Miami, but the atmosphere is a world apart. At 7,500 feet, the trees are tall and the air fresh. It’s delightfully cooler than in the desert below, which persuaded many early miners to make the trek to homes up here after hard, hot workdays in the mines. Signal Peak (7,812 feet) was used by the U.S. Army as a heliograph station, allowing frontier commanders to communicate for miles by reflecting sunlight off of mirrors. Today the peaks are topped with a multitude of modern radio towers, passing messages at speeds unimaginable 150 years ago, and the heavy forest also shelters two dozen summer cabins and four campgrounds.
