Apache Lake, formed by Horse Mesa Dam, is the second-largest of the four reservoirs on the Salt River northeast of Phoenix. All of the lakes in the chain are more or less within easy reach of the Phoenix metropolitan area. To get to them, you twist and wind your way along the Apache Trail National Scenic Byway, past Lost Dutchman State Park and along Canyon Lake. If you’ve got the munchies, stop at the restaurant and general store at the ghost town of Tortilla Flat, just past Canyon Lake. The Apache Trail turns to dirt shortly after this, but is well maintained and poses no trouble for a carefully driven sedan. You might want to park at the Fish Creek bridge and hike along the canyon bottom, scrambling your own way around the boulders.
