Powell Springs is only 15 miles from Arizona’s central corridor and Interstate 17, but it feels as if you’re in the middle of nowhere. Forest Road 372 brings you up from the junction with AZ 169 through low chaparral, sometimes turning sandy as it winds through the washes below the Black Hills. The campground is at 5,300 feet elevation but is shaded by a surprising grove of ponderosa pines, along with scrub oak and alligator juniper. Wild grape vines add a touch of verdant green. The area is peppered with springs and crisscrossed with streambeds, but after years of drought, most run only after heavy rains. Powell Springs still produces clear, fresh water, but the spigot in the campground was locked down after reckless campers broke the pump twice.
