The Prescott Basin lies to the south and west of the burgeoning community of Prescott and encompasses 59,000 acres of the Prescott National Forest. Mixed conifer forest covers much of the land, but stands of oak and stretches of pinyon pine and juniper woodland are also common. A wildland-urban interface area, this part of Arizona provides days of scenic drives and plenty of camping, hiking, and sightseeing opportunities. You’ll find several campgrounds in the Prescott Basin, each with its own appeal, but Lower Wolf Creek probably best suits tent campers. The campground is in a creek-carved valley, in a stand of ponderosa pine, fir, Arizona walnut, and Gambel oak. This is an old Civilian Conservation Corps camp, and the stone masonry picnic tables add rustic appeal. Boulders decorate the pine needle–strewn ground and provide extra screening in some sites.
