Prescott began life when Arizona’s first territorial governor set up the seat of government near the protection of Fort Whipple. It lost, regained, and lost again the title of territorial capital. Today it’s one of the state’s fastest-growing communities, with more people every year discovering the ideal Arizona climate in this mile-high city surrounded by lakes, mountains, and pine forests. Roll into town and you’ll probably find an art fair or other event going on in the grassy square of the historic Yavapai County Courthouse in the center of downtown. Montezuma Street no longer has 40 saloons as it did in the good ol’ days, but several bars keep historic “Whiskey Row” alive with nightly live music and dancing. The World’s Oldest Rodeo is held in Prescott, and the broncos buck and the cowboys strut annually during the week of Independence Day.
