The Mingus Mountain Scenic Road, snakes its way from Jerome across the Black Hills toward Prescott. These hills have been mined since prehistoric times, and if you look closely, piles of telltale tailings will reveal where fortunes were made and (far more often) lost. Where the road passes over the hills’ summit, turn in to the picnic parking at Forest Road 104 for some interpretive tidbits. This is also your turn for the twisting but manageable dirt road up to Mingus Mountain. On your way, peruse the Church Meadow Wildlife Area, where you may spot shy pronghorn antelope grazing. Past the Methodist church camp, you’ll find Mingus Lake (formerly called Elk Tank). Swimming and boating are prohibited on this tiny lake, but it is stocked with rainbow trout. There is a $2 day-use fee, as there is for the nearby vista and picnic area.
