Situated on old Route 66, the city of Williams survived the arrival of the interstate and thrives on tourism in the Western theme, with steakhouses galore and gunfights staged on Main Street every summer evening. Cowboys, both live and animatronic, can be found singin’, gun slingin’, and even stilt-walkin’ through the crowds passing by the antiques stores, gift shops, restaurants, and plenty of saloons. If cowboys prove too tame for you, grizzled mountain men follow the tradition of the town’s namesake. Pioneer and trapper William Sherley Williams, often affectionately called “Old Bill,” traveled through the area in the early 1800s. The Bill Williams Mountain Men celebrate the pioneer spirit of Old Bill during the annual Rendezvous Days, whose centerpiece is a 200-mile charity horseback ride from Williams to Phoenix, with riders dressed in fur, buckskins, and an impressive array of beards.
