Sprawling across the broad plain of Washoe Valley, Washoe Lake and Little Washoe Lake are the centerpieces of Washoe Lake State Park, designated in 1977 in part to preserve a piece of the picturesque valley from the rapid development that has overtaken Reno to the north and Carson City to the south. Most recreationists seem to spend the majority of their time in the park around the much larger Washoe Lake boating, swimming, fishing, picnicking, or camping, leaving diminutive Little Washoe Lake to the relative few. A 1-mile trail around the smaller lake’s southeast shore provides visitors with an easy stroll to wetlands of the Scripps Wildlife Management Area at the north end of Washoe Lake. The wetlands provide forage and nesting habitat for a wide range of migratory birds and waterfowl, including pelicans, herons, and ibis (a bird checklist is available at park headquarters). While pairs of bald eagles have been known to winter in the area, red-tailed hawks are frequently seen throughout the year patrolling the skies. Along the trail, hikers will be treated to fine views across Little Washoe Lake of the Carson Range to the west.
