Hidden Valley Regional Park offers a lot of possibilities for people who enjoy the outdoors, including hikers. Besides the five designated trails within park boundaries, myriad unimproved use trails and old roads wind through the western front of the ochre-colored slopes of the Virginia Range. The mountains’ colorful hues are the result of moisture from geothermal activity interacting with the minerals in the soil. While joggers, dog walkers, and casual hikers frequent the gently graded loop trails on the valley floor, serious hikers are drawn to the Highland Trail, a 2.3-mile loop that climbs halfway up the hillside for superb views of the Truckee Meadows and the Carson Range. Fortunate visitors also may see some of the area’s wild horses.
