Ignoring the jumble of communication towers and ski area equipment that litters the summit of Slide Mountain, hikers can have a similar view to the one from the top of nearby Mt. Rose with a fraction of the effort. From the Mt. Rose Campground, a closed service road, open to hikers, bikers, and equestrians, makes a 1.25-mile-long winding climb to the summit ridge. The 360-degree vista includes a number of significant landmarks, including the Lake Tahoe Basin, Truckee Meadows, Washoe and Eagle valleys, and the Virginia Range. Perhaps the grandest view is that of neighboring Mt. Rose, which seemingly appears to be just a stone’s throw away.
