The section of the Tahoe Rim Trail (TRT ) between Tahoe Meadows and Brockway Summit was the last link of the 164-mile trail to be completed before the official opening in 2002. Offering some of the route’s finest views, as well as the trail’s high point atop Relay Peak (10,338 feet), one wonders how we got along without this part of the trail for so long. The 18-mile distance at relatively high altitude is a difficult one-day hike, but a reasonable expectation of solitude in the middle section is a fine trade-off for those who are up to the task. Backpackers will find good campsites at Gray Lake, a half mile off the TRT near the midpoint of the trip. Wildflowers are at their peak from mid-July to mid-August, but the spectacular views are always in season during the usually snow-free months of July through mid-October.
