Spooner Lake was created in the 1850s for use as a millpond when a timber company constructed a dam across Spooner Creek. The dam was rebuilt in 1929 for rrigation purposes. Nowadays, within Lake Tahoe Nevada State Park, recreation has replaced logging and irrigation as the principal use around Spooner Lake, with hikers, naturalists, picnickers, and anglers flocking to the pleasant surroundings. A nearly level, 1.6-mile path encircles the lake, providing an easy hike complete with interpretive displays, park benches, and superb scenery. The trail passes through diverse plant communities, including Jeffrey pine forest, aspen groves, flower-filled meadows, and sagebrush scrub. The area is also home to a wide range of wildlife.
