One of the best places to see actual written record from people long ago is at the Sloan Canyon National Conservation Area. Scattered along the relatively gentle canyons surrounded by low hills are roughly 1700 cataloged petroglyphs carved by people from several tribes, including Anasazi, Patayan, and Southern Paiute. In 2002, Congress designated the 48,000-acre Sloan Canyon National Conservation Area to protect the petroglyphs in this canyon from sprawl. Vehicle: HC/4WD. The legislation required the BLM to come up with a management plan by the end of 2005. When this book went to press, there was talk of a visitor center in nearby Henderson, with volunteer docents available to offer tours and protect the site from vandals. Contact the BLM at the number above to find out developments.
