This historic pioneer homestead provides shade and beauty, as well as a scenic trail that explores the natural wonders of this rugged canyon. Vehicle: Passenger car. In the 1870s, Sam and Hannah Kershaw homesteaded this picturesque canyon. James Ryan bought the property in 1904, then, in 1926, donated the “Kershaw Gardens” as a public park. The Civilian Conservation Corps developed picnic sites and a wading pond. In 1936, Kershaw-Ryan became a state park. In 1984, two successive flash floods wiped out the campground, picnic area, water system, and restrooms, forcing closure of the park. In 1997, the park reopened, offering shady picnic areas and three nature trails. The rugged backcountry of the Clover Mountains behind the park is also accessible.
