There is no name for this canyon on any map. Nor will it stand out as particularly inviting on any map. However, this canyon offers what no road map can show: stunning geology. I named it Bookshelf Canyon to describe the wonderful limestone layers standing vertically on both walls of the canyon. This hike offers not only mindbending geology, but also an encounter with wide-open Mojave Desert. Bookshelf is an insignificant part of the 1.6-million-acre wildlife refuge that most people have never visited. It’s just another blank spot on the map, and maybe its anonymity is why I like it. For many years, Bookshelf Canyon was part of the BLM “Fish and Wildlife #2” Wilderness Study Area. In 2002, Congress transferred jurisdiction of this land to the Fish and Wildlife Service, making Bookshelf part of the Desert National Wildlife Range. Vehicle: HC/4WD.
