Also starting from the easily accessed Barnhardt Trailhead on the east side of the Mazatzal Mountains, this classic loop uses the Y Bar, Mazatzal Divide, and Barnhardt Canyon Trails to loop around Mazatzal Peak, the highest summit in the range. The loop can be done in either direction. If you plan to spend the night, hike clockwise as described here so that you have a chance to pick up water at Y Bar Tanks, the most reliable water source on the loop. The Willow Fire burned much of the Mazatzal Mountains in June 2004. Expect eroded trails and deadfall at higher elevations.
