This is a rugged and demanding loop through one of the most remote portions of the Blue Range. Starting from the historic Coronado Trail highway, the loop starts on the Bear Pen Trail and traverses the east slopes of Rose Peak, offering views of much of the portion of the country traversed by this loop. A descent of rugged Strayhorse Canyon, much of which is crosscountry, leads to the Blue River, which you follow through a dramatic box canyon. The return is via the little-used but good AD Bar Trail past several historic homestead sites. A short section of highway connects the two trailheads. Hike this loop clockwise to get the cross-country in Strayhorse Creek and along the Blue River out of the way first.
