Thin hikers as well as fat ones can enjoy this interesting loop through complex volcanic rock formations on the east slopes of Mount Elden. From the trailhead, walk up the trail to the northwest 0.1 mile to the first trail junction. Fatmans Loop starts here, and the trail on the right will be the return route. Stay left as the trail continues to climb up the gentle slope through open ponderosa pine forest. Another 0.3 mile brings you to the Pipeline Trail junction, reached just as the grade starts to steepen. Stay right to remain on Fatmans Loop. The trail now veers more to the north as it climbs the base of Mount Elden through a rugged landscape of volcanic rocks.
