The stunning scenery, wildlife values, and archaeological interest in the Ironwood Forest National Monument make this primitive recreation area a terrific cool-weather hike with your dog. You will need to pack in water, as washes tend to be dry except immediately after rains; pack out all waste. And be especially alert on warm days—four types of rattlesnakes call this pristine desert upland home. Review snakebite first-aid procedures and keep hands, paws, and noses away from rock overhangs and any other places where vision is restricted. Because this is a desert bighorn sheep management area, leashes are required in the monument; once your dog is watered and leashed, you are ready to go.
