Once your dog is watered and leashed—remember to pack in water for the hike or plan to treat water you take from the ephemeral streams you encounter along the way—cross the park road and follow the signpost onto a leftward path, which directs you to the Sutherland junction. Here, take a right onto the Sutherland Trail. You begin your hike on a wide, sandy gravel path which meanders through an old-growth mesquite bosque (riparian forest) as it loosely follows Sutherland Wash toward the Santa Catalina Mountains. To your left is a slightly elevated ridge, where a chorus line of saguaros rises up from behind the mesquites, their already impressive heights exaggerated by their high perch.
