Before you leave, be sure your dog is well watered and that you pack plenty of water in; the trail climbs away from the creek past the 0.7-mile mark. Parker Creek flows through the Sierra Ancha Experimental Forest— a name which connotes a very large laboratory with trees under glass. Actually, the research area was established to study different ways to manage forest watersheds. The site was selected because it was representative of several different desert ecosystems, including the chaparral semidesert and ponderosa pine forest you and your dog will travel through on this hike. The forest shade keeps your dog happy on the trail, and she can have a splash on the way out to cool her pads. The views, particularly on the accessible overlook points at the lower and upper ends of the hike, are spectacular and stretch all the way south to Four Peaks. Closer in, you can see local landmarks like Lake Roosevelt to the south, Armer Mountain, and Carr Peak.
