You head out from Wagner Loop trailhead on an initially northward path that is fairly wide and made up of broken down granite gravel. You will see the campground on your left during this part of the hike and pass two campground spur trails on your way to the Granite Trail, the second piece of the four-legged loop that you and your dog are enjoying. From the desert environs and wildlife here—palo verde trees, jojoba, saguaros, creosote, jackrabbits, Gambel’s quail, and coyotes—you might already expect that the hike is almost completely exposed except for wash areas and boulder outcroppings.
