Once your dog is watered and leashed—pack in additional water in case the spring is dry—head up the path beyond the barricade. On Trail 294 you are padding along an old logging road that leads northwest directly to Red Rock Spring. Under boot and paw, the road is a pleasing combination of dirt and gravel. The canopy is a lush jumble of fairly young but tall ponderosa pines, oaks, and junipers, including the scaly alligator subspecies; at your dog’s eye level, manzanitas, agaves, and boulders cling to the forest floor. Your walk is shaded and the climb is gentle and steady through this palette of reds and greens tucked under the Mogollon Rim. At just under a mile, you will see a sign directing you to Red Rock Spring by turning right and heading a short way along the Highline Trail. The area is lush—the best indication of water even when the spring is not flowing—the shade is inviting, and your views of the rocky red bluffs to the east are magnificent.
