Once your dog is watered and leashed (pack in water since the hike to and from the creek is strenuous; you will need to purify what you take to drink from the stream), head downhill along what is initially a compacted forest floor. Unlike the Calloway Trail, this trail starts in the shade of parklike stands of ponderosa pines at the canyon’s top. Given the steepness of this hike, the surface is terrific—some loose gravel and rocks pop up only occasionally along a footpath composed of sturdy boulders and compacted forest floor.
