For Gifford Pinchot, father of the U.S. Forest Service, it was love at first sight when he visited Houston Draw. Today the towering trees, flowing springs, and rock faces staring out from the canyon make an altogether perfect setting for you and your dog to enjoy a journey back in time to Aspen Spring. Houston Brothers Trail 171 is part of a system of trails—the Cabin Loop Trail System—linked by history as well as geography. The Forest Service built modest living quarters for firefighters on round-the-clock hazard duty during fire season; many of these cabins still stand. One such cabin, now named for Pinchot, marks the beginning of the Houston Brothers Trail, and another is within barking distance of Aspen Spring.
