Close the gate behind you and you are on your way on Keyhole Sink Trail 114. There is a lot on this hike for your dog (and her human companion) to enjoy: spring and autumn, after snowmelts and rains, Keyhole Sink is a pretty pool in the heart of the box canyon. The trail’s namesake “sink” feeds a lush, green oasis that, when it holds water, is visited by deer, a plethora of woodland birds, butterflies, and spadefoot toads. Your path into the box canyon is an easy hike along a comfortable and compacted forest floor. You and your dog wind northwest through a shady ponderosa pine and alligator juniper forest. Thanks to the double life of this trail—this is a popular cross-country skiing trail in winter— there are plenty of blue triangles on trees that keep you heading the right direction should mud or duff obscure the footpath.
