As you and your pooch first set out, the path gently rolls southwest and downhill on a wide swath of loose gravel and grasses. The parklike, ponderosa pine forest casts dappled shade along your entire route, making for cool spring and fall outings and pleasantly warm summer jaunts. Bits of concrete lying off to the side of the path and this trail’s arrow-straight configuration are all that initially indicate the original roadway. Soon, though, history crowds in and a concrete culvert here or a bit of unbroken roadway there emerges. Occasionally, you can glimpse the faint traces of an even older Route 66 right-of-way, from 1921, to the side of the path.
