Once your dog is watered and leashed—pack in additional water since the lake may be dry—you are ready for a short climb and some fun exploring a forest oasis made by the remnant of an ancient cinder cone. You and your pooch begin by walking uphill on the old jeep road, now a wide path. The grade is gentle here, but constant, and the trail is a comfortable blend of compacted soil, pine duff, and cinder. Your way is partially shaded by a fairly thick forest of ponderosa pines and livened up here and there by stands of aspens, which glow red in the fall.
