The backpacking residents of Tucson are extremely lucky to have two mountain wildernesses right in their back yard. This loop hike follows trails in the Santa Catalina Mountains north of the city, and takes you from Sonoran desert foothills to pine and fir forested mountains and back. It’s only one of many possibilities for backpack trips in the Santa Catalina unit of the Coronado National Forest. The lower, desert section of this loop is hot during the summer, while the highest elevation may have snow from December through March. In addition, more than 7000 feet of elevation change are involved.
