The Apache Railroad Trail follows a section of the old Apache Railroad through the White Mountains and traverses beautiful alpine meadows through the high country. Originally built as a logging railroad, it survived as a tourist railroad until the late 1960s. The U.S. Forest Service, working with volunteer groups, recently constructed a recreation trail along the old railroad grade. The trail is open to horses, mountain bikes, and hikers. Roads closely parallel sections of the trail, so don’t expect a wilderness experience.
