The one-way Santa Rita Crest hike starts along Madera Canyon, which features a flowing stream and is a world-famous birding site. A short spur trail can be done as a side trip to Mount Wrightson, the 9453-foot summit of the Santa Rita Mountains. The remainder of the trip follows the scenic Santa Rita Crest Trail northward. Cliffs and rock outcrops along the crest of the Santa Rita Mountains break up the alpine forest and provide several views of the grassy valleys and other sky island ranges of southeast Arizona and northern Mexico.
