The La Barge-Boulder Canyon Loop traverses three forks of the spectacular La Barge and Boulder Canyon system in the western Superstition Mountains. The hike mixes on-trail and cross-country hiking and takes you past the most famous Superstition landmark, the twin spires of Weavers Needle. Cross the highway and follow the Boulder Canyon Trail south up the desert slopes. As you climb, a panoramic view of Canyon Lake and the rugged terrain around it opens behind you; don’t forget to take a break and look back! You’re hiking through classic Sonoran desert, and such distinctive plants as the giant saguaro cactus, and green-barked palo verde trees dominate the landscape. As you continue the ascent, La Barge Canyon opens below you to the west. Do not attempt this hike during or immediately after a period of heavy rain because the canyons may be flooded and impassable. Water is scarce on this loop during dry periods.
