This is a scenic loop around the highest peak in the range. It passes through a variety of country and offers hundred-mile views in several directions. In the spring, you may be treated to delightful cascades in Rock Creek. This great hike starts on the Y Bar Trail, the southernmost of the three trails that start from this popular trailhead (the Half Moon Trail, the return route, is on the north side of the parking area). Follow the rocky Y Bar Trail as it switchbacks southwest up the broad mesa, wandering through the juniper and pinyon pine forest. After 1.0 mile, the trail reaches the east slopes of Mazatzal Peak and crosses several small canyons before reaching Shake Tree Canyon, 2.0 miles from the Barnhardt Trailhead. Follow the Y Bar Trail into ponderosa pine forest and up to an unnamed saddle at the head of Shake Tree Canyon, 1.7 miles further. Dry campsites are available at the saddle, though you would have to carry water from the trailhead.
