This loop takes you through a remote section of the Blue Range Primitive Area. The hike starts by crossing the Blue River, which flows through the heart of the wild area, and then climbs over WS Mountain and traverses a section of the Mogollon Rim through fine stands of ponderosa pine, Douglas-fir, and quaking aspen. From WS Mountain, you’ll have outstanding views of the northeastern section of the Blue. Follow Forest Trail 52 south across the Blue River. The broad floodplain piled with debris shows the power the Blue River can exert during the spring snowmelt or summer thunderstorms. Warning: If the Blue River is flooding high, abort the hike and do not attempt to cross the river. After a heavy winter, snowdrifts may block the highest section of the loop until late May. The lower sections of this route, near the start and end, are hot during June and July.
