This is a long, rugged loop through a remote red rock canyon system. You will see few hikers on most of the hike. You’ll start along a permanent creek, and loop up onto the Mogollon Rim through pine forest, before returning to the desert grasslands. Several optional trails can be used to make this a shorter loop, if desired. Sycamore Canyon drains a large area of the western Mogollon Rim, and often floods during the spring snow melt. From March through mid April, this trip may be impossible. On the other hand, after the snow melt ends, the creek rapidly dries up and you may have no water at all from Parsons Spring to Geronimo Spring, which is 20 miles of mostly cross-country hiking.
