This barrier-free trail features bald cypress trees along the Little Maumelle River. This is a leisurely stroll on a paved surface. The trail wanders through a low woodland area and then starts veering to the left. The Little Maumelle River comes in and runs along the south side of the trail. The river is narrow and shallow and looks more like a brook. Bald cypress trees stand along the riverbank like sturdy sentinels. Recognized by the knobby “knees” growing near the flared trunk base, the bald cypress is unlike most other conifers in that its needles turn brown and fall off in winter. Two theories exist about the purpose of the “knees.” One is that they provide support on an unstable swamp floor. The alternate theory is that the knees allow the trees to breathe when the swamp floods. Several places along the way allow access to the river. AstroTurf has been laid from the trail down to the water’s edge for easy footing. A bridge with a bench overlooks the gurgling waters at one serenely beautiful spot.
