This is a series of individually named trails that are combined for a hike across forested ridges and ravines. Our description starts at the Austell trailhead near the visitor center, swings past Lake Austell, follows a portion of the historic Old Military Road, and ends at Lake Dunn. A wooden bridge leads from the parking lot across the backwaters of Village Creek to an intersection, where a right turn takes visitors to the amphitheater. To the left is the Arboretum Trail, a walkway with signs that name the trees and shrubs along the trail. Village Creek State Park is home to several species of flora not commonly seen over the rest of Arkansas, including butternut, tulip poplar, and cucumber trees. The cucumber tree is the tallest of the magnolia species. The young cones look somewhat like cucumbers in color and shape. The bark is rough and ridged, unlike that of other magnolias.
