The second-easiest ascent of a 14,000-foot mountain in the Sierra (Mount Muir is the easiest). The large cleft separating the north and south summits makes this peak easily identifiable from down in Owens Valley. Split Mountain is an increasingly popular alternative to the crowded Mount Whitney, especially for hikers with four-wheel-drive vehicles. Split Mountain, although technically easy, is a long, steep climb and makes for a lengthy day.
