This eTrail is a detailed description of an adventurous loop through the Grand Canyon backcountry. Here is an excerpt from this eTrail's route description. "It is only 1.5 miles of boulder-hopping from Rider Canyon to Boulder narrows, but that short distance took us more than three hours. There were some stretches of fast ledges but generally it was a question of big, sometimes slippery, rocks. After an early lunch at the narrows, it was still an hour for the next 0.5 mile to the rim route at mile 19. Bert and Jim took off to test it and the rest of us went on. It was close to 1500 by the time I caught up to the others waiting at the impasse where our River route had vanished. Caroline volunteered to check the next ledge up and when that didn’t go, she and Don tried the next—and highest—one. They were gone a long time and came back without a definitive answer. Finally, the decision was made to retreat to a small bit of sand a few hundred yards back upstream for camp. Gary and Caroline stayed to push the route through to North Canyon for us to follow tomorrow.
